Musik Grunge : Spirit Yang Tak Pernah Padam

  Grunge muncul sekitar tahun 1980 dan di awal tahun 1990 di kota Seattle, Washington. Meski yang mengangkat pamor musik ini ke dunia bisa dibilang pelopornya adalah Nirvana dan Pearl Jam. Bisa dibilang genre musik ini sebenarnya berasal dari musik punk. Namun, Nirvana disebut band grunge, sebaliknya mereka malah lebih senang disebut band punk.

  Sebut saja Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone (yang 2 anggotanya bergabung dengan Pearl Jam) dan Soundgarden. Merekalah yang cukup berperan penting untuk grunge. Di belantika musik dunia, Soundgarden emang lebih bernasib baik dibanding ama 2 band lainnya yang nggak bertahan. Kalo belum kenal sama apa sih musik grunge, coba dengerin Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden dan Alice in Chains untuk dapat memahami ciri-cirinya. Tapi kalo masih kesulitan, coba inget hits dari band Audioslave atai The Vines yang relatif baru muncul. Paling tidak, mereka ini masih terpengaruh unsur-unsur grunge di berbagai komposisinya.

  Smashing Pumpkinsatau band sejenis, juga mewarnai wajah musik dunia sejak 1990an dengan penjualan album puluhan juta copy di seluruh dunia. Merekalah inspirator band-band baru yang kemudian lahir dengan perkembangan baru. Spirit Grunge seakan nggak pernah padam kala band-band pendahulunya itu bubar. Liat aja personel-personel andalnya yang kemudian melebur diri, bergabung bersama atau membentuk band lain. Contohnya ada Chris Cornel (mantan vokalis Soundgarden) yang membentuk Audioslave bersama Tom Morello dkk (mantan gitaris Rage Against The Machine) yang albumnya ngeboom di pasaran. Ada Matt Cameron (drummer Soundgarden) yang gabungan ama Pearl Jam dan Billy Corgan (mantan vokalis Smashing Pumpkins) yang membentuk Zwan, tapi sayang bandnya berumur singkat. Foo Fighter, yang dimotori drummer Nirvana, si kocak Dave Grohl juga satu contoh spirit yang bertahan. Pearl Jam boleh dibilang cukup hebat karena mampu eksis sejak tahun 1990 hingga sekarang, tanpa mengubah konsep musiknya.

  Ciri-ciri musik grunge bisa dipahami dari tema lagunya yang sering menyangkut urusan sosial - politik yang kerap kali terjadi di dunia. Pearl Jam, pernah lumayan jelas mengkritik presiden Amerika lewat lagu Bushleaguer dalam album Riot Act. Nada-nada lagunya seakan mengalir bersama dalam satu kerangka musik tertentu. Sedangkan distorsi gitar, drum yang keras dan irama yang rata plus penghayatan pembawa lagu juga cukup unik cukup menandai karakternya. Kadang, vokalnya terdengan menggumam atau meraung dari sang vokalis, seakan saking kuat penghayatannya. Penampilan di panggung mereka sering terlihat dengan pakaian sehari-hari rakyat jelata. T-shirt, hem flanell dan jeans, sangat simple dan natural. Secara umum mungkin terlihat plain atau biasa saja tapi tetap cool, tough dan musiknya........dalem banget.

  Fenomena aneh sempat muncul seiring maraknya grunge. Tidak diketahui dari mana asalnya, sering ditemui ada kesenjangan antara kelompok pecinta punk dengan para fans musik grunge. Meski awalnya dari Seattle, genre ini lahir juga di negeri kanguru lewat berkibarnya Silver Chair yang mengusung karya lewat 3 personelnya. Mereka sempat disebut "baby grunge". Mungkin karena relatif baru. Buktinya, Courtney Love istri mendiang Kurt Cobain pernah ngomong kalo sang vokalis Silver Chair (Daniel John) mirim dengan Cobain. Aliran grunge ini selanjutnya menelurkan genre musik alternative, dengan ciri mirip-mirip pendahulunya. Salah satu perbedaannya adalah pada tema yang lebih luas dan irama musik yang lebih variatif.
